Penthouse Cielo de Roma
We lived here for five years and still come back regularly, so it’s a home with soul, furnished with our own things, rather than a corporate apartment. It still has everything you need when you’re traveling.

The terrace
The terrace wraps around the top floor, 650 ft² of it, with 180° views of the skyline and, on clear days, the mountains and the volcanoes. It has a dining table and chairs of tzalam, a Mexican hardwood, plus lots of plants and cacti. Both bedrooms open straight onto it. Sunsets out here are the best part of the day.
Inside
The living room, dining room and kitchen are one big, colorful open space: bright Mexican colors with an industrial touch. There are two long, extra-wide sofas, a mid-century dining table for six and a slate kitchen bar with three stools. The kitchen has a Nespresso machine, French press, kettle, oven, microwave, toaster, dishwasher and everything to cook with. We can have groceries delivered at cost for your arrival.
Each bedroom faces south, has its own A/C, blackout blinds, a work desk and a good memory foam mattress, with eight pillows of different kinds to choose from. Each has its own tiled bathroom with a fixed and a handheld shower.
Good to know
- Hot water: like most homes in Mexico City, the heater gives about 10 gallons (37 liters) at a time, then needs 6 to 8 minutes to heat the next tankful.
- A/C: Mexico City is mild and dry most of the year, with highs in the 70s °F. Very few apartments here have A/C at all; we have it in the bedrooms.
- Luggage: you can drop bags off from 11:30 am and leave them until 4:30 pm.
- Elevator: small, for four people.
The neighborhood
Roma Norte is the city’s liveliest neighborhood, full of chef-driven restaurants, cafés, galleries and independent shops in turn-of-the-century mansions, and still a real neighborhood with the Medellín market, tortillerías and retirees reading in the park. Plaza Luis Cabrera is five minutes away, Condesa a few blocks west, and the best breakfast in Roma, Lalo!, is in the building. See Roma, Condesa and Juárez and the rest of my Mexico City guide for what to do nearby.
